Signs for prostate cancer are not apparent until the condition has become fairly advanced. The earliest stages are without symptoms. A doctor can recognize signs for prostate cancer during a physical examination, but this takes skills and experience which lay people do not have. Besides, it is physically impossible to reach in to your own bowels and feel if signs for prostate cancer have developed! Even male doctors need others to check their prostate glands by clinical means. Further, check ups must be repeated at least once a year, because a normal prostate can become malignant over a period of time.

The signs for prostate cancer are not exclusive. Symptoms may be due to a reason that does not have anything to do with the prostate. Even if a physical examination reveals that the gland has enlarged, the inflammation or growth will hopefully be benign. A doctor can order blood tests, or arrange for a biopsy of a tiny section of the prostate, in order to find out whether the gland has become cancerous. Since successful treatment is so dependant on early diagnosis, there are no benefits in making any guesses about the condition, or waiting for signs.

Possible Signs for Prostate Cancer

Not everyone has access to regular medical care, and cancer can even develop between two periodic check-ups. Hence, there is no harm in being aware of possible signs that cancer may have developed in the prostate. The most common signs relate to urination. Men start visiting the toilet often, and feel that their bladders do not empty completely. Passing urine could be painful as well, with visible traces of blood. Overall, any changes in urine habits may signal the advanced development of prostate cancer.

Changes in urine habits are often accompanied by discomfort and pain in the pelvic region, with the distressing feeling extending to the back and to the lower limbs as well. The bones may be involved also. Ejaculation could hurt as well, though prostate cancer affects elderly men most of the time. Prostate cancer signs are not limited to the area of the gland. A general malaise and disinterest in food could also develop. However, no one should feel depressed at the frightening descriptions of prostate cancer signs, because regular medical examinations can detect the condition well before symptoms make their presences felt. Early stages of prostate cancer are relatively simple for doctors to treat, and patients can look forward to quick and complete recoveries.

Prostate cancer is a very commonly occurring cancer, the most common cancer in men in fact, and the worst part about it is that the signs and symptoms are often very subtle and misleading and so it often takes a while for the cancer to be caught and assessed.

Prostate cancer is typically a progressive disease, one that is very slow growing, and it can even develop with no symptoms at all.

As the disease progresses however, there are usually a few symptoms that will be experienced, and this includes: the need to urinate frequently and particularly at nighttime, problems in the initiation and cessation of urination, the complete inability to urinate, blood in the urine or semen, painful ejaculation, and burning or painful urination.

Of course if you notice any of these signs or symptoms you need to get in to see your doctor as soon as possible. Explain to them what you have been experiencing and have them check you out for prostate cancer.

Radiation Treatment for Prostate Cancer

If and when you are diagnosed with prostate cancer, the next step is treatment. There are various different methods of treatment available, with one of the most commonly recommended being the radiation treatment for prostate cancer.

What is it?

There are actually two different types of radiation treatment for prostate cancer, which are: brachythearpy and external radiation therapy.

The first radiation treatment for prostate cancer, brachytherapy, is a treatment that involves the implanting of tiny radioactive capsules, which are inserted into the prostate gland. The seeds work by emitting a stream of radiation, which in turn kills the malignant tumor.

The procedure is able to be performed on an outpatient basis, and typically will take anywhere from 45 minutes to an hour. In terms of recovery, patients are discharged the very same day and they are usually able to resume their regular chores and activities within a few days.

The second type of radiation treatment for prostate cancer, external radiation therapy, is quite different. This treatment is recommended usually only when the tumor has actually spread through the prostate capsule to surrounding tissues, and it is given on an outpatient basis for several weeks.

The particular type of treatment that you will have to go with will be determined by your doctor, and they will decide this dependant on several factors, including your age, physical condition, and how far the cancer has spread.

Prostrate cancer is an incredibly serious condition. Under certain circumstances, prostrate cancer can be life threatening. However, if one contracts prostrate cancer this does not mean that the condition is terminal and there is no recourse.

In fact, quite the opposite is true. Many people have contracting prostrate cancer and later were able to “beat” the cancer. This is because they were able to undergo prostrate cancer treatment that reversed the condition. There are a number of ways an individual can seek prostrate cancer treatment and there are a number of different means in which to arrive at a decision as to which prostrate cancer treatment once can settle upon.

Common Methods of Prostrate Cancer Treatment

The most common method of prostrate cancer treatment is the surgery option. This is a self-explanatory means of eradicating the cancer where the cancerous growth is removed through a complicated surgical procedure. Another means in which to eliminate prostrate cancer involves a procedure known as cryotherapy. Cryrotherapy is utilized less than the surgical option, but it is still an effective procedure.

What this procedure involves is freezing and removing the cancerous growth. One of the reasons that it has become less utilized than other forms of prostrate cancer treatment is the fact that there is the potential of “over freezing” tissue which can lead to a number of complications. This does not mean that the procedure is dangerous or controversial, but rather that it has certain risks inherent that make surgery the more preferred option.

Additionally, there are those who pedal “alternative” means of treatment, but there is very little credibility found in them. Surprisingly, there are a number of people who seek less than credible prostrate cancer treatment that, sadly, often results in the condition getting worse as opposed to seeing any noticeable improvement. Of call the forms of prostrate cancer treatment, radiation therapy is the most common and is usually used first before undergoing an invasive procedure such as surgery or cryotherapy.

In this procedure, x-rays are used to kill the cancer cells. This is a difficult procedure to endure, but it is much preferable to surgery. However, if radiation therapy is not successful in eliminating the cancer, then a more invasive procedure will generally be required.

Ultimately, if the prostrate cancer treatment is successful the individual will remain cancer free. It is not uncommon, however, for the cancer to return. If it does return, then more treatment will be required. This may be arduous, but it is the only way to effectively combat prostrate cancer.

Prostrate cancer remains an incredibly serious condition. While many great strides have been made in recent years in regards to treating prostrate cancer, the condition still remains a condition that can lead to a premature death if it is not treated properly. Please note: this is not meant as a way of presenting an alarmist image of the treating of prostrate cancer.

Rather, it is simply a way of providing a proper context for the necessity to have the condition treated before it becomes an overly serious one. In order to make sure that any prostrate problems a person may be experiences are properly dealt with and to make sure that prostrate cancer is treated while it is still able to be treated, a properly qualified physician must be alerted so he may perform the primary care necessary to aid the patient.

Now, in order to alert a doctor of the potentially serious onset of prostrate cancer, the patient must be familiar enough with prostrate cancer symptoms to realize that the disease may be present.

Common Prostrate Cancer Symptoms

The common symptoms of prostrate cancer are as follows: difficulty in urination including frequency, uncontrollable urination or painful urination; blood in the urine; bladder discomfort; back and hip pain; blood in semen or painful ejaculation. If you experience these conditions, it would be best to see a physician immediately.

Unfortunately, due to the benign nature of some of the symptoms (back pain for example), people may often not see a doctor when they experience certain prostrate cancer symptoms. As such, it is always best to err on the side of caution and see a doctor if you experience any of the above.

Avoiding Denial in Regards to Prostrate Cancer Symptoms

No one wants to get sick or have to deal with a serious medical condition. This is simply human nature. After all, who would want to accept the fact that he or she is gravely ill? Honestly, the type of person who would face up to such a situation is a person who is highly intelligent. After all, sticking one’s head in the sand in regards to prostrate cancer symptoms is not a smart move.

In fact, it is downright dangerous and destructive. For a person to get better they need to first seek treatment and no one will seek treatment for cancer or any condition if they are in denial about it. Fighting cancer is difficult as it is. Do not compound the matter by fighting yourself on top of it.

Prostrate cancer remains a form of cancer that was once completely unknown, but has been thrust into the spotlight as a result of a number of high profile individuals contracting this form of cancer. Rudolph Giuliani, the former mayor of New York City and current potential Presidential nominee, is one of the more well known public figures who battled the dreaded disease.

It must also be noted that Giuliani successfully overcame his cancer and is fully cured. If anything, this can provide a sense of hope and optimism to all that prostrate cancer, while a highly serious condition, is not one that is incurable. If one discovers the cancer at and early stage and then seeks proper treatment, the ability to combat the cancer will see greater odds.

Preventive Maintenance is the Best Option

When it comes to being able to successfully defeat prostrate cancer, the best mode of ‘attack’ would involve preventive maintenance. That is to say, it is best to combat the cancer at its earliest stage when it is still benign and has not spread to the rest of the body. In order to avoid having to deal with cancer when it is at an advanced stage, one need to have regular check ups performed by one’s doctor.

Self diagnosis of the condition is impossible. It is simply to complex to detect without proper laboratory testing and physical examinations. Often, people will not visit a doctor until symptoms and problems become extremely uncomfortable. In many instances, even when it is obvious there are symptoms of an underlying condition people will avoid seeing a doctor until it becomes obvious there is a serious problem present.

Detecting Prostrate Cancer Early

In order to avoid the scenario previously described, it is best to have regular check ups with one’s doctor. Far too often, this is neglected and the results can be devastating. As such, a yearly physical examination is something that should be performed when a male reaches middle age.

If there is the presence of an enlarged prostrate or a cancerous growth, the physician will (hopefully) detect it and then take appropriate action to keep the condition from worsening. Prostrate cancer is a serious condition and in order to avoid its onset one must become serious about maintaining one’s health. This involves making sure that one keeps his appointments for yearly physicals. This, of course, is not a guarantee that one will never contract a form of cancer, but it does put a person on more solid footing if one must eventually battle prostrate cancer.

There is nothing more important to a human being is his or her health. If one’s health is not properly maintained then there is great potential for a serious medical condition to result. Unfortunately, most people will look at health maintenance from far too narrow of a scope. For example, people will exercise regularly and eat properly and believe that they will remain safe and healthy as a result.

In short, the individual has taken specific, concentrated actions in order to safeguard his or her health. Now, this is a wise move, but it is not all encompassing. In other words, making simple lifestyle choices – no matter how good those lifestyle choices are – will not provide absolute certainly that no negative medical condition will result. Part of the problem here is that the person is assuming that self action is the only action that remains necessary for maintaining proper health.

This is not a valid assumption as the need to visit a doctor is imperative as well. Of course, most people do not visit their doctor until they feel sick and, in some cases, this can at a time when it is too late to effectively deal with a problem, particularly if the problem turns out to be cancer. This is why regular check ups and prostrate exams are critically important for a man when he ages.

Undergoing a Prostrate Exam

This is not to say that prostrate cancer is more prevalent than any other form of cancer. Nor is it to provide any presumptions as to prostrate cancer (or even benign prostrate problems such as an enlarged prostrate) is more serious than other potential serious conditions to develop. However, prostrate problems may prove easier to detect because of the simple procedure known as a prostrate exam. This is also not to state that the exam itself is comprehensive enough to detect full blown cancer. What the exam does do, however, is provide a starting point for the physician to detect any anomalies that may exist that are the possible precursors to a potentially serious condition.

Frequency of Prostrate Exams

An exam of this sort should be performed at least once a year. A yearly check up will definitely be helpful in avoiding any potentially serious issues that may occur down the line. If anything, the best course of action to take in dealing with any medical condition is getting to the condition before it becomes an extremely serious maintenance.

Prostate cancer slow-growing malignant growth that begins in the prostate gland, which is a major part of the male reproductive system, and prostate cancers start in the glandular tissue of the prostate and are called adenocarcinomas.

If you or someone you know is suffering from prostate cancer, then surely you have already heard of the prostate ultrasound before. Prostate ultrasound imaging is a type of ultrasound scanning or sonography that involves exposing part of the body to high-frequency sound waves in order to produce pictures of the inside of the body.

The Equipment

There are actually a few different pieces of equipment that are used for the prostate ultrasound, one of the most major being the actual ultrasound scanner, which consists of a console containing a computer and electronics, as well as a video display screen and a transducer.

The transducer is one of the most important parts of all, as it is the small handheld device that resembles a microphone, and which works by sending out a high frequency sound wave and then listening for a returning wave to get results.

How it Works

Because ultrasound images are captured in real-time, they are able to show the specific structure and movement of the body’s internal organs. The prostate ultrasound test is completely painless and is able to help physicians properly diagnose and treat prostate cancer.

An enema is taken two to four hours before the ultrasound, in order to clean out the patient’s bowel, and you will most likely be asked to drink a certain amount of fluids beforehand because a full bladder helps greatly with the visualization of the prostate gland.

How it is Performed

The prostate gland is located directly in front of the rectum and so the prostate ultrasound test is performed transrectally, meaning that the transducer is lubricated and then placed into the rectum. The images are typically obtained from a variety of angles, in order to get the best view of the prostate gland and thus the best and most accurate results.

Once the examination is complete, the patient is generally asked to get dressed and wait until the images have been reviewed. The entire ultrasound examination usually takes no longer than 20-25 minutes.

You will not have to take this test unless your doctor has recommended that you do so, and especially if you are over 40 you want to make sure that you speak with your doctor about this issue. After all, prostate cancer is the most commonly occurring cancer in men worldwide, and thus this is a very serious issue.

In order to keep an eye on the prostate and in particular watch out for prostate cancer, there is a prostate test that every man should be aware of, especially men over the age of 50, as they are most prone to developing prostate cancer.

The Prostate Test

The prostate test, more specifically the prostate-specific antigen test, is a test that measures the level of prostate-specific antigen, or PSA, in the patient’s blood. The process of this prostate test is quite simple – the doctor takes a sample of the patient’s blood, and then the level of PSA in the blood is measured in a laboratory.

It is very normal for men to have a rather low level of PSA in their blood, however it is important to realize that prostate cancer and other related health conditions tend to raise PSA levels, and so if your level is even remotely higher than usual, your doctor will want to run further tests.

In regards to what group this prostate test is recommended to, the considerations on this matter vary. Some encourage yearly screening for men over the age of 50, while others advise men who are at a higher risk for developing prostate cancer to begin screening as early as age 40.

Controversy

There is a fair bit of controversy surrounding this test, and this is because it is not yet actually known whether or not the test saves lives. More specifically, as of yet it is not entirely clear if the benefits of PSA screening actually outweigh the risks of follow-up diagnostic tests and cancer treatments.

It is really important that you work together with your doctor here, as they will be able to better explain issues regarding this test with you, and let you know their opinion on whether you should take it or not. Of course the final decision is basically entirely up to you, and so the best way that you can make the most informed and intelligent decision here is by making yourself as knowledgeable on the subject as possible.

Take the time to learn about the prostate test on your own time, through pamphlets, brochures and using the Internet is a great option as well, so that you can become more informed and aware. When it comes to matters of the health education is essential, and although you do have your doctor there, you yourself need to be aware of what is going on.

Prostate surgery is used to cure prostate cancer, but prostate surgery is unnecessary if the disease is detected and cured in the early stages. All surgery can be risky, and prostate surgery is no exception. All men over fifty are at risk for prostate cancer, and those men who are conscientious about regular doctor visits can usually avoid prostate surgery. Medical researchers have made wonderful strides to detect and treat prostate cancer in recent years. Although many men died of prostate cancer years ago, death from prostate cancer can be avoided more frequently because of the medical developments in recent years.

Most men find out about the presence of prostate problems through diagnostic testing. Medical researchers have found several treatments that can cure prostate cancer in the early stages. Each man will have to choose an appropriate treatment with their doctor. Once a problem with the prostate is detected the treatment is usually effective. Once the cancer has spread, prostate surgery is often used to treatment the disease. Prostate surgery is usually recommended if the cancer has spread from to prostate gland to other surrounding organs. The surgery usually includes removing the prostate gland and some of the organs that might be affected.

Dedicated Physicians Select The Best Method For Prostate Surgery

There are different techniques that surgeons will use for prostate surgery. These talented people will consult with each patient to decide on the options. The surgeon will try to remove the prostate to rid the body of the cancer. The incisions are made to remove the prostate properly without harming other organs of the body. There are some new techniques that are being used for prostate surgery as well as other surgeries that are less invasive. The surgeon performs the operation with the smallest incisions possible.

Some of the latest techniques for prostate surgery include robotic surgery. These techniques usually require less time for recuperation. Robotic surgery and laparoscopic surgery require smaller incisions which mean that the patient should recover more quickly from the surgery. Since surgery almost always includes some risk, men should have the proper medical tests on a regular basis to catch any harmful condition before it starts. There is evidence that an improved diet will help men avoid prostate problems. A diet of fish that is rich in fatty acids improves a man’s chance of avoiding prostate cancer. Plenty of fruits and vegetables in the diet seem to improve the chances of avoiding prostate cancer. Every man should try to avoid prostate problems so they can survive without any kind of prostate surgery.

A surgical procedure performed for prostate removal is called a prostatectomy, it can be either total or a partial removal of the prostate. Prostate removal is one possible treatment option for those with prostate enlargement or prostate cancer. The prostate is a gland only found in men which is located under the bladder and in front of the rectum. It surrounds the neck of the bladder as well as the urethra which is the tube that is responsible for draining the bladder. For a healthy man the prostate is about the size of a walnut.

There are three glands necessary for reproduction and one of these is the prostate which is responsible for producing a sticky, milky fluid of acids and enzymes. This fluid then makes up about fifteen percent of the overall volume of semen and it helps to sustain the level of sperm cells in the testicles. There is muscle surrounding the prostate which contract when needing to ejaculate the fluid. When the entire prostate gland has to be removed it is known as a radical prostatectomy and it can be performed in several ways.

Prostate Removal Methods

The first option is a perineal prostatectomy which removes the prostate though an incision in the scrotum and anus. There may also be another incision in the abdomen to remove the nearby lymph nodes. The second method is a suprapubic prostatectomy in which an incision in the abdomen just below the belly button is used to remove the prostate and sometimes the nearby lymph nodes. This method is often used in the cases of spreading prostate cancer since it allows the surgeon to remove more tissue. The final method is a laparoscopic prostatectomy which uses a thin tube-like instrument to remove the prostate inserted through a small incision in the belly button.

Other Options

When it comes to prostate removal there is also the option of a partial prostatectomy in which only part of the prostate tissue is removed. This method of prostate removal is typically only used for those with prostate enlargement and is typically performed as a laser procedure, in which the laser beam cuts in or destroys part of the prostate tissue. However, this procedure is still considered experimental so you won’t be able to find it in all hospitals.

Prostate removal is an effective treatment option for those with prostate enlargement and prostate cancer. However, it is still a major surgery which means it has some risks and side effects that you should be aware of. Incontinence and impotence are the two biggest problems associated with a prostatectomy, although the good news is that they are temporary and may go away in time. “Nerve-sparing” techniques have also helped to substantially reduce the chance of impotence.
