by Shola Oslo

A fertility calculator can help you pinpoint when you’re next going to ovulate. What is a fertility calc, you ask? It’s not a technical gadget that requires a degree to operate… it’s a simple online calculator that lets you plug in a few numbers to work out the best time to conceive.

There’s only a short window of time to conceive in your cycle, so fertility calculators offer a simple way to target your conception efforts to reach your goal of getting pregnant fast.

You’ll have to provide some information so the calculator can do its job. Don’t worry – they don’t need to know your life history – just a few facts. The important thing is to ensure that the info the calculator requires is correct.

You’re most likely to be asked when your last period started, the number of days in your menstrual cycle and sometimes these calculators want to know information about your luteal phase.

If you regularly note down the dates of your period in your journal, this will be an easy exercise for you. Then, all you need to do is count the days in between the dates your period starts.

What’s a luteal phase? It’s the second half of your menstrual cycle that occurs once you have already ovulated. It can last anywhere from 10 days to 16 days, and it’s not as easy to work out, because you need to have an idea of when you’re ovulating.

The good news is there are not many sites that ask for this information; most fertility calculators only ask for the first day of your last period and the amount of days in your cycle.

Some people prefer to use a pen and paper to work out when they’re ovulating. If this is you, and you’re looking at your journal dates, you can count backward 14 days from the time your next period is going to start, and this will be your approximate ovulation date. This is not an exact science, so assume you might be fertile 2 days before and 2 days after that approximate ovulation date.

To get best results, combine the use of a fertility calculations with charting your basal body temperature and identifying when this rises, keeping notes of changes in the way you feel mid-cycle, and checking your cervical mucus every day.

There are tips and tricks to realizing when you are ovulating which I explain on my website and books. Once you become more in-tune with your body using a fertility calculator to get pregnant will be as easy as 123!

by Richard H Ealom

INTRODUCTION: Heart disease is a number of abnormal conditions affecting the heart and its blood vessels. Also known cardiovascular disease, it mainly affects people who are older and is a sign that there are problems with the heart and blood vessels.

It has become the number one cause of death in the U.S., is a primary cause of disability, doesn’t go away, but by working with your physician, you can live longer and feel better. Types of cardiovascular disease include: Coronary artery disease (CAD), the most common type and is the #1 cause of heart attacks.

In 2003, almost twice as many females died of cardiovascular disease (both heart disease and stroke) than from all cancers put together. The older she gets, the more likely she is to have cardiovascular disease; however women of all ages should be concerned.

African American and Hispanic American/Latina women are more likely to develop heart disease because they tend to have more risk factors such as obesity, not enough exercise, high blood pressure, and diabetes than Caucasian women. Women of color are also more apt to die of the disease.

Having diabetes elevates your chances of developing heart disease and high levels of triglycerides are linked to the disease in some people. Also Being obese increases your risk. Chest or arm pain or discomfort can be a symptom of cardiovascular problems and a warning sign of an actual or impending heart attack.

If your dad or brother had a heart attack before age 55, or if your mom had one before age 65, you’re more likely to develop heart disease. Birth control pills can pose risks for some women, especially women older than 35, women with high blood pressure, diabetes, or high cholesterol and women who smoke.

Close to 700,000 people die of heart disease in the USA each year. You can find out more about heart disease by phoning the National Women’s Health Information Center at 1-800-994-9662.

The chance of developing coronary disease can be reduced by taking steps to prevent and control those factors that put people at larger risk for cardiovascular disease and heart attack. The very best ways to prevent the disease are to control high blood pressure, diabetes or a elevated cholesterol level and, if you smoke, STOP SMOKING.

CHOLESTEROL: What does a high level of cholesterol have to do with heart disease? It can clog your arteries and keep your heart from getting necessary blood. People with high blood cholesterol or elevated blood triglycerides often have no symptoms, so have your blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels checked often. If your levels are high, talk to your physician about what you can do to lower them. You may be able to decrease your levels by eating better and exercising more, if not, your physician may prescribe medication to lower and bring it under control.

If there is too much cholesterol in your blood, it can build up on the walls of your arteries, forming plaque and producing blood clots. There are basically two kinds of cholesterol: Low-density lipoprotein (LDL) is usually called the “bad” type because it can clog the arteries that transport blood to your heart. High-density lipoprotein (HDL) is known as the “good” kind because it takes the bad cholesterol out of your blood and keeps it from building up in your arteries.

All females age 20 and older should have their blood cholesterol and triglyceride levels checked at least once every 5 ys. If you are overweight, reducing your weight can help decrease your total cholesterol as well as LDL (“bad cholesterol”) levels.

Try to consume more foods low in saturated fats, trans fats, and cholesterol. Skim (fat-free) or low-fat (1%) milk and cheeses, and low-fat or nonfat yogurt, Fruits and vegetables (try for five a day), Cereals, breads, rice, and pasta created from whole grains (such as “whole-wheat” or “whole-grain” bread and pasta, rye bread, brown rice, and oatmeal), Limit consumption of organ meats (liver, kidney, brains), Egg yolks, Fats (butter, lard) and oils, Packaged and processed foods.

There are two diets that may help lower your cholesterol: Heart Healthy Diet and Therapeutic Lifestyles Changes (TLC) Diet. Exercise can help lower LDL (“bad cholesterol”) and raise HDL (“good cholesterol”). If your doctor has prescribed medicine to lower your cholesterol, take it exactly as you have been told to.

CONCLUSION: Heart disease is not contagious – you can’t get it like you can the flu or a cold. It is a general term that refers to a variety of acute and chronic medical diseases that affect one or more of the components of the heart. The signs you describe to your physician will help to decide if you need to be tested for heart disease. Your physician will also check if you have any conditions that can increase your chance of developing the disease.

These conditions include: high blood pressure, diabetes, smoking, elevated cholesterol level, menopause in women, family members who have had heart disease at a young age. If you have cardiovascular disease, your angina can be treated by treating the heart disease. Maintaining a healthy diet and weight in addition to a regular exercise program can help you avoid developing heart disease.

If there was a method to escape and defy time and enjoy the pleasure of staying your forver would you take it? I would and I am sure you would too. You might think this sounds impossible but the good news is it is very possible. It is just a matter of giving extra care and attention to yourself and emphasizing your features to bring out the best of what you have. I will share some very easy steps in this article that you can follow to start defying your age.

Sitting up straight and putting shoulders back are very important for your health and appearance. A good posture can make you look slimmer, taller, and confident. Many regard people with correct posture as young, happy, and at ease with their disposition. A good posture can even give you an instant weight loss of 10 pounds in the eyes of others. Its benefits, by the way, are not just for the outside. A correct posture primarily puts muscles, joints, bones, and your organs to where they are supposed to sit. It reduces the risk of having back and neck problems, arthritis, and other pains. A proper one too can help prevent the spine from becoming abnormally fixed which can lead to fatigue, headaches, and some problems with organs and functioning. With a proper posture, one can also experience less strain because one wouldn’t overuse his muscles. Stretching hourly and practicing the proper posture every hour can help strengthen the muscles that will be needed to hold the body erect. A 10-year study indicated that couples who are in their 40’s who have sex at least three times a week look younger than those who enjoy it less often. The study even indicated that the faces of these couple have less lines and wrinkles, and have smoother and suppler skin. They credited this to the wonders of Oxytocin. It is a hormone released during sex that reduces stress. Having sex at nighttime is helpful, too!

Nicotine in cigarettes acts as a vasoconstrictor which constricts the blood flow in our body and hence inhibits the smooth and easy flow of oxygen and nutrients to their destination. Besides that, nicotine has a diuretic effect in which it saps the body of moisture making our skin tough and dry.

Carbon monoxide which is a harmful componet produced by smoking has a higher affinity to blood cells that oxygen. This reduces the amount of oxygen in the body.

Smoking also contains a large number of free radicals that attack healthy cells and damage normal tissues. Smoking reduces Vitamin A and collagen in the body. Vitamin A is used in the repairing function of the body. Collagen, on the other hand, is a protein that produces new and healthy skin.

Sex is the best form of exercise! Yes, it really is and studies have proven that couples in the 40’s who have sex at least three times weekly look younger than those who enjoy it less regularly. Studies have shown that the faces of these couples have less lines and wrinkles and have smoother skin. The main cause of this is a hormone called oxytocin which is relased during sex that acts as a stress release hormone.

Overall, about 1 in 12 women will contract breast cancer at some age, with the odds higher later in life. But thanks to modern medicine, many breast cancers can be successfully treated with only minor impact. However, the success of that treatment depends critically on early detection, and the earlier the better. One simple way to up the odds of discovery is to perform a regular breast self examination.

The purpose of breast self examination is early detection of changes that might signal a condition that needs further investigation by either a professional clinical exam, mammogram or other diagnostic tool. Any changes could potentially indicate an abnormality. But to be able to determine what is abnormal one must know what is normal. Normal varies from individual to individual even though there are commonalities.

The first element to a proper self-exam is to know what your own breasts feel and look like in general. Every aspect of the body changes in subtle ways on a regular basis. During the menstrual cycle those changes may be exaggerated. Breasts can become enlarged or more sensitive. Start your self-exam a few days after your period every month so it becomes a habit. For post-menopausal women, choose the same day every month to perform the exam.

Stand in front of a mirror unclothed and make a visual inspection. Look for changes in the size of only one breast. Normal menstrual cycles and other hormonally related variation will usually affect both the same. Look for any changes in size or color of the nipple or areola (the darker skin around the nipple). Note any wrinkling or ‘orange peel’ appearance that is not due to cold temperature. Most areola are round. Look for any lack of symmetry.

Squeeze a nipple gently and note any fluid that comes out. Some lactation is normal in some women. But yellowish, pus-like fluid is a reason to call your physician for a closer look. It may be a simple infection or it could be an early sign of a developing tumor. Repeat the procedure for the other nipple.

Continue to look for any such tumors by feeling carefully over the surface of the entire breast with the arms lowered. Take in not just the surface from the breastbone to side, but up toward the armpit as well. Press firmly with the finger pads and move the hand slowly, feeling for any thickening or lumps.

Not all lumps are cancerous. In fact, most are not. A lump may be a simple cyst, a fluid-filled sac of tissue. Often they are round and can be moved slightly. These are benign, though you may want to have them removed anyway. Some will fade spontaneously over time.

Cancerous lumps are typically harder and less regular in their shape and size. Typically they are attached to breast tissue. Not all hard lumps are cancerous either, so don’t get yourself worked up. Many are what are called fibroadenomas, a benign clump of cells. Professional testing is required to know for sure what you have.

You should be extremely aware of any lumps that change in size. Cancer is the malignant and uncontrolled growth of cells in tissue. Tumors do not remain static but instead increase in size and later can spread to other areas of the body.

Continue the tactile exam by raising the arms overhead and applying pressure all the way from the breastbone up to the armpit again. Repeat for the other side and breast.

While lying down you should perform the procedure again. First lower your arms, and then raise them overhead. Make sure to feel any changes, especially in instances where tissue has become hard. The procedure can also be done in the shower in an attempt to reduce the amount of friction on the skin, but I can sometimes be difficult to find changes or lumps with water beating up against your skin. You might want to use baby oil or lotion to reduce friction instead.

Any woman over age 20 should be performing regular breast self-exams, while those over 40 should get a mammogram at least annually.

Though it is still an active research area, many lifestyle and environmental factors for breast cancer have been identified and are being studied. Luckily, most of them can be controlled if an individual wishes to optimize his or her health. Even men can get breast cancer, but it is at a lower rate than women, occurring in only 1 out of 133.

Women who have not had any children before the age of thirty are at an increased risk of contracting breast cancer. The cause of such risk has been determined to be twofold: the number of menstrual periods the individual has experienced an the related factor of how much estrogen is contained within the body. Hormones such as estrogen and progesterone play a role in cell growth. Cancer is a condition in which cells grow into abnormal shapes and numbers.

Having had multiple pregnancies prior to the age of thirty reduces an individual’s risk of contracting breast cancer. Pregnancy itself carries its own risks even in the modern medical settings offered today. Using this method to offset the risk of breast cancer is not recommended. But, if you intend to bear children, it should be comforting to know about this side benefit.

The risk of cancer from taking oral contraceptives has yet to be determined. Women who have stopped using birth control for more than ten years show no increased risk. Because most women who contract breast cancer don’t do so until their 50’s or later, it is hard to isolate the contribution.

Diet is a more direct factor. Research is still being conducted and the findings still leave an exact answer unclear. It is however, known that healthy diet and lifestyle choices can be a factor. Obesity definitely raises the risk of contracting breast cancer due to the simple fact that fat cells store estrogen. Fat cells also produce a slight amount of estrogen on their own even though most estrogen in the body is generated by the ovaries.

The exact contribution of an individual’s diet is still unknown. For a time period it was popular for individuals to assert that a high fiber diet could almost act as a preventative. Research does not support that notion, but it is a definite that a diet higher in fiber is healthy for man reasons. Even if diet doesn’t prevent the onset of breast caner maintaining good health and well being is very important when it comes to any type of treatment and diet is a major part of that effort.

Included with diet, age and body type appropriate exercise is a major factor in contributing to one’s overall health. Moderate activity for an hour a day can help in keeping the muscles toned and leaving the body in overall good shape. The exact amount that this aids in the reduction of breast cancer is unknown. One study was able to correlate 1-2 hours of brisk walking per week with an 18% lower risk of breast cancer.

Surprisingly, there are several factors commonly suspected to increase breast cancer risk that are not supported by contemporary research findings, according to the American Cancer society. Smoking is one of them. No link has been found between cigarette smoking and breast cancer. Lung cancer, of course, is another story. Environmental pollutants in general have not been correlated with breast cancer.

Because these are obviously not healthy lifestyle choices, the goal of optimizing one’s overall health and well being would heavily weigh against them.

Consuming alcohol in moderation has been determined to be healthy. Using alcohol heavily has been correlated with an increased risk of contracting breast cancer. The risk increases by about 10% for every daily hard alcohol drink one consumes. Because it also damages the liver it is contributing to overall poor health. Drinking heavily therefore is an unsafe and unwise decision.

Maintain a good attitude and a good health program and your odds of breast cancer will be as low as you can make them.

Cellulite has become one of the most hated female conditions in recent years especially amongst those who are generally slim; it is generally found in the lower half of the body. Most women carry excess fat in thighs and buttocks, but this problem is not confined just to the overweight; women who are naturally slim can also suffer with this unsightly problem.

You see as the collection of fats push against the connective tissue, it tends to cause the surface of the skin to dimple or pucker and visually look lumpy; giving you what is referred to as cellulite. After many years of research, scientists still cannot determine the exact reason for its formation or why some are affected more than others but there may be some connection between toxins that enter the body and how certain fat cells store them.

What is certain though is that the older you become the greater the likelihood of this type of cell forming as the elastin and collagen, that help stop aging lines, becomes less effective. It is classified as a hormonal imbalance experienced by women and seldom appears on males as normally fat stored in the thighs and buttock is the same as fat stored all over the body so no difference is observed.

Often the cellulite goes unnoticed and it is only when a person’s muscles are compressed or the skin is pinched that it can be seen and felt but women should not feel depressed about the problem as most suffer with it to a greater or lesser degree. Many factors can influence the buildup; ranging from the sex of the person to their age, genetic make-up, skin type and skin thickness, all have a part to play in its formation.

As the reasons for the formation are still a mystery, no complete treatment has been devised to rid the condition from people who suffer with is badly even though there are many creams that claim to rid someone of it. Some clinics specialize in the removal of cellulite simply apply deep massaging to puff up the skin and temporarily reduce the cellulites appearance.

Liposuction has now started to be used to try and remove the fat cells and even by injecting drugs directly into the affected sacks directly. However, these are only temporary measures so do not provide permanent relief and liposuction is really only efficient for deeper based fats and not those close to the surface as with cellulite.

There isn’t one single therapy or treatment that can rid someone of these fat deposits and even special burning creams provide dubious results; however the most recent creams available seem to just hide the effects or offer a temporary fix. The most successful regimes so far are to adopt regular exercise, a good nutritious low-fat diet plan and reduce extra weight where possible

Water too is useful as it has the effect of flushing out toxins that accumulate and are thought to be partly responsible for the cellulite; in addition to this smokers are urged to quit or reduce their smoking which is an effective way for toxins to enter the body.

A killer is stalking one third of the adults in this country, and one fourth of them are completely clueless. Over 73 million people over the age of twenty in the United States suffer from high blood pressure, also called hypertension. Their arteries and blood vessels are rigidinflexible, creating more work for the heart as it pushes blood through the body. Undiagnosed or ignored, this killer quietly works the heart harder and harder until it can no longer take the stress, and the end result can be a massive heart attack or stroke.

While a diagnosis of high blood pressure is scary, patients should realize that it is treatable. It does not have to be a death sentence. There area many ways of effectively managing high blood pressure. Many doctors prescribe manmade drugs, and these may do a fine job on treating symptoms. The cause, however, often remains untreated.

Many factors can cause the development of high blood pressure. Too much caffeine and alcohol have been linked to the disease. Overall eating habits are a big culprit, and obesity is definitely a factor. Fatty foods, red meat, too much salt, and too little nutrition can be a recipe for hypertension. Stress in your life plays a role, too. A difficult work place, huge changes like marriage or a move. or very emotional triggers like a major disease or divorce can result in high blood pressure. Finally, the presence of diabetes is a strong risk factor.

Changing your lifestyle to tackle these factors can help regulate blood pressure. And instead of depending upon prescription pills to treat symptoms, more and more people are testing out natural remedies. Knowing what foods nourish your heart and blood vessels can help you revive their flexibility and health.

As with any health threat, you should not ignore high blood pressure. You should discuss it with your physician to create a plan to get your blood pressure within acceptable range. Speak up honestly, and be proactive about your medical care. Do not be afraid to question the side effects of any pills you are prescribed or to ask about alternative supplements. After all, you both have an identical goal in mind: a healthier, happier you!

Gestational diabetes is when a pregnant woman who has never had diabetes develops diabetes in the twenty-fourth to twenty-eighth week of pregnancy. There are reportedly 135,000 cases of gestational diabetes every year in the United States. While it is a serious condition, women diagnosed with gestational diabetes can and do deliver healthy babies. With the proper medical care, a healthy diet, and controlled weight gain the risks of this type of diabetes are minimized.

Somewhere in the vicinity of the twenty-fourth and twenty-eighth weeks of pregnancy, a physician will request some testing to rule out the possibility of gestational diabetes. One of the following two testing techniques might be used. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (One Step): entails going without food for four to eight hours and determining blood glucose levels. Then a drink that is high in sugar is consumed and the blood glucose is again determined after two hours. Two Step: entails consuming the high sugar drink first, then blood glucose is determined after one hour. A non-diabetic’s sugar will be in the normal parameters within one hour. If the levels are elevated, the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test will then be issued.

Experts do not know what causes gestational diabetes. Theories propose that the growing fetus creates hormones that obstruct the mother’s capability to create enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels regular. Due to the transformations that her body is undergoing, she might require triple the amount of insulin as normal to get rid of the surplus glucose in her blood stream. The overload of glucose in the blood can be going to the fetus, by way of the placenta, causing a state called Macrosomia or plainly put, “fat baby”.

Some other risks involved to both the mother and the baby are: A macrosomic infant may need to be delivered via caesarian section to avoid injury. The newborn may suffer from low blood sugar. The newborn may suffer jaundice. The infant’s blood may have low mineral levels. The infant may have breathing distress upon delivery. The children are at higher risk of being obese. The risk of developing Type 2 diabetes is higher for both the child and the mother. The chances for a woman developing gestational diabetes with future pregnancy are increased.

In order to steer clear of risks to both mother and her fetus, gestational diabetes needs to be caught and dealt with promptly. A physician will recommend a nutritious diet and safe exercise plan. Moderating carbohydrate intake and exercise helps to control weight gain. An extreme weight increase leads to complications for the mother in addition to the instant and potential risks to the infant. If Insulin is required to manage blood glucose levels, the physician will explain how to take it. Keeping an eye on the blood glucose level is another way to steer clear of danger.

Gestational diabetes corrects itself on its own after delivery. The placenta is not making hormones that have an effect on the mother’s capability to manufacture insulin. It is strongly urged to get another glucose test approximately six weeks after delivering to make certain that Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes was not mistakenly diagnosed as gestational diabetes. Also, having another test executed will also evaluate the possibility of getting Type 2 diabetes in the future.

The risk of having Type 2 diabetes in women, who have had gestational diabetes, and their children, can be lessened by making changes in their eating and exercising habits. Obesity is the leading cause of Type 2 diabetes, but eating right and exercising and losing the excess weight can make all the difference.
