Eye problems are just one of the many concerns anyone with diabetes is surely aware of. Diabetic retinopathy is serious in that it has a direct effect on your vision. What happens is the diabetes causes damage to the retina. But to understand how and what can be done to prevent it, you first need to understand the retina itself.

Without getting into too much detail, you can think of the retina as a group of nerves in the back of your eyeball. They are like your eye’s camera, giving your brain a look at what you are seeing. What retinopahty does is cause problems with this simple process.

Blood vessels in the retina are sensitive, and can split. If this happens, fluid from those vessels drip into the eye’s compound. And that’s when the problems begin.

The first thing you’ll notice is what seems like an obstruction in your vision. Over time, scar tissue develops both in and around your eyeball. And finally, the retina will actually detach from where it normally sits.

In diabetics this is more likely to happen because elevated blood sugar levels can trigger the problem. And what makes this worse is that it is normal not to have any symptoms until the problem reaches the severe stage. The end result is that by the time you realize you have a problem, it can be too late to fully correct it. Diabetic especially need to go to the eye doctor a minimum of once a year. By doing so the problem can be caught early enough to make correcting it much easier.

Also be aware of any symptoms that may occur between scheduled visits. Some people notice floaters, which are nothing more than black or white spots that appear for no reason. Double vision, weak vision or blurry vision can also be signs of diabetic retinopathy. Take these symptoms seriously, even if they appear to be extremely mild. Contact your eye doctor immediately if any of these things should happen.

Catch it early enough and there are several good treatments available. Options include prescription medications, laser surgery or a more invasive surgery. Discuss each of these options with your doctor to determine the best choice for you.

But again, don’t wait until you have symptoms. Have your eyes checked regularly. Then your doctor can begin any treatment for your diabetic retinopathy before the problem becomes too severe.

Diabetes can cripple you for life if you let it, but one way of taking control and not letting it do that is by following a diabetes diet plan. This is not really an option – unless you do so, your health will worsen and every facet of your life will be affected by diabetes. So what you should do is, consult a nutritionist who will design a healthy eating plan for you, which has enough variation to satiate your taste buds, while ensuring that your nutritional needs are met at the same time.

The typical diet plan for a diabtic must include 50% starch, 30% protein and 20% fat. The diabetic food pyramid recommends a certain measurement level and because of this, preparing diabetic food must be done according to exact and standard measurements, such as 1 cup, 1 tablespoon and 1 teaspoon.

You really have to be dedicated to following your diabetic eating plan. Fatty and high calorie foods like fried foods and snacks between meals must all be strictly avoided. You also have to be careful not to miss any meals – this can mess up your metabolism. Eating out can be a problem, but you have to be careful.

Fructose is much easily digested than sucrose, so consuming a lot of fruits and vegetables is recommended, but they must be fresh and not frozen. Frozen foods are often preserved with various fatty and sugary chemicals. Avoid whole milk dairy products in your daily meals, but you should get your necessary dairy intake by drinking skimmed milk. Look away from all sweets, honey and candy items and other bakery and/or confectionery items containing high amounts of enriched carbohydrates.

Binges out on the town are out of the picture, too, when you are on your diabetic eating plan. Alcohol should be strictly avoided. Red meat, mayonnaise, eggs and other foods that are high in cholesterol and fat content should be avoided as far as possible too. Fizzy drinks, sauces and dressings and bottled juice are other items you must try and avoid. What you should aim at is a daily intake of around 1800 calories. This means that your daily diet must be carefully planned.

Let us look at what one day on a diabetic eating plan can be like – breakfast can be quite filling and nutritious, if you have half a cup of oatmeal, about two thirds of a cup of apple juice, a slice of bread (but make sure it is wholemeal bread), a cup of skimmed milk, as long as it’s not sweetened, and a soft-cooked egg. For lunch, you could have half a cup of tuna, two slices of wholemeal bread, half a cup of diced tomatoes, a teaspoon of margarine for the bread, a cup of mixed fruit for a healthy dessert and a glass of lemon tea to wash it all down with. Dinner, again, can be tasty and filling, with a slice of wholemeal bread, half a cup of mashed potatoes, either a tossed salad or a cup of broccoli and three ounces of baked chicken. You have to be careful about salad dressing, though – don’t pick one off the shelf, make a low-fat, no-sugar one with olive oil and seasoning.

So making the right diabetes diet plan is not easy – you have to know what nutrition your body needs and you have to understand your metabolism. With your doctor, you can make your own diet plan to keep diabetes away, which will be tasty, healthy and a pleasure to follow.

by Julia Hanf

Diabetes can present two main categories of problems, in the form of short term ill-effects and longer term harm. Minimizing both areas requires discipline.

The most common short-term effect is sudden dips and spikes in blood sugar. These can cause dizziness, confusion, upset stomach, and other problems. While some diabetics seldom have this problem, most will occasionally experience mild episodes. Routine self-care can help minimize episodes.

Regular and careful monitoring is a must. It’s no picnic to endure a finger prick three times a day. For those who simply can’t muster the will, it is worthwhile to look into some of the newer glucose monitoring devices that don’t require it.

Some contain tiny, powerful lasers that create a hole through which blood oozes. They produce only a mild tingling sensation. One recent device senses glucose level through the skin using an infrared beam, requiring no blood sample at all.

The goal is to keep the glucose-insulin balance as close to normal levels as possible. Non-diabetics have a fasting glucose level under about 99 mg/dL. Even after a heavy meal, when glucose may rise to over 200 mg/dL, insulin is released which brings it back down within a couple of hours. That means that keeping the glucose level right isn’t so much achieving a static number as maintaining the correct dynamic balance.

Monitoring should include routine physician visits and an A1C test four times a year. The glucose level at a particular time can be measured with various tests. However, the A1C test measures the average level over time. The test name comes the abbreviation for glycated hemoglobin-HbA1c.

Hemoglobin’s role is to carry oxygen from the red blood cells to the tissues. Hemoglobin is glycated when there is extra glucose in the blood. The A1C test can give an average glucose level, because glycated hemoglobin remains.

Long term the effects will accumulate, good or bad. Over 10-15 years or longer, many diabetes patients of the past would endure blindness, kidney damage, nerve damage and other ill health effects. That no longer has to be the case. With contemporary understanding of the disease and modern technology it’s possible to reduce the odds of those effects nearly to those without the disease.

Much of this management is disciplined exercise and diet. Many diabetics can keep their glucose-insulin balance nearly normal through diet and exercise, without medicine.

This is possible because the lowering of body fat with exercise and diet helps the body maintain a better balance on its own. Body fat affects hormone production and release and it affects how the body responds to glucose levels. There is a definite correlation between body fat and the degree of diabetes, although researchers don’t understand all the factors involved.

Proper weight and body fat maintenance will also help keep blood pressure at the right level. Chronic high blood pressure is one of the major elements in increasing the risk of common diabetes problems: heart attack and stroke, eye and nerve damage, and others.

With care the diabetic can lead a fairly normal life. Checking the blood glucose level a few times a day can mean fewer health problems and less worry in the long-run.

When it comes to knowing whether your child is suffering from diabetes it is important that you understand what the signs and symptoms of this condition are. In most cases today there are plenty of places where you can obtain the right information concerning skings of diabetes in kids. The best place often to start your search would be the internet.

What is also important to note is that there are several different types of Diabetes that both children and adults can suffer from. However, for children the most common form is known as Type 1 Diabetes. It is this type of diabetes which will actually prevent the body from producing insulin which it needs.

Although some children may suffer from Type 2 the problem with Type 1 is that the onset of this condition happens very quickly. Whilst with Type 2 it can take some time before any of the signs or symptoms begin to appear. Below we take a look at the most common signs associated with Type 1.

1. Kids will need to urinate more often. This is because their bodies can not produce insulin which it uses to convert glucose into energy. Any excess glucose the body holds is passed through to the urinary tract and once there begins to absorb fluids. This in turn then results in a child need to go to the toilet more as their bladder will feel full far more often.

2. A kid will start to drink more. This is a result of the excess glucose that their body is unable to get rid of actually absorbing fluids it already has. So if you do find that your child happens to be drinking more and going to the toilet more often, then it would be wise to arrange an appointment with your doctor as soon as you can.

3. When it comes to what are the signs for diabetes another one that often may make you believe that your child has this condition is that they eat more. Again this is a result of their bodies being unable to convert the glucose into energy correctly. So they tend to eat more in order to help counteract the problem.

4. Another sign of Diabetes in kids is that they may suddenly start to complain that they feel tired very quickly. Even if they have had a good nights sleep because their body is unable to absorb glucose to make energy they will feel tired and lethargic even if they are not doing anything.

5. The final sign of Diabetes in kids which may lead you to believe that your child has this condition is a sudden loss of weight. Again because their body is unable to produce insulin which then allows glucose to be converted into energy their bodies will find other sources inside itself to provide it with the energy it needs. It will generally start to use up any stored fat within the body to produce the energy that it needs. Also weight loss can be caused because they are losing more fluid than usual.

by Marcus Clarkson

When it comes to treating any form of diabetes there are many different things that a sufferer can do. Because both Types 1 and 2 are incurable, there are a number of different things a person can do in order to treat these conditions. They can manage the problem through the use of tablets and insulin supplements as well as a diabetes diet. The diabetes diet natural treatment means that the person is less likely to suffer from any unwanted side effects.

The first thing that a person should do when they have been diagnosed with diabetes is to devise a diet with their doctor that can help them to control the condition effectively. But along with their doctor helping them to devise such a diet the internet is a great place to get advice and information as well.

But normally when a person has been first diagnosed with having diabetes their doctor will actually come up with a dietary plan for them. This is because initially actually being able to regulate the diabetics blood sugar levels can be very difficult to do.

It is when first devising the right diet a person with diabetes should be providing their doctor with details regarding their diet and lifestyle habits as they are now. Also after the diet has been devised it is vital that the person with diabetes ensures that they go back to their doctor for regular checkups during the first few months. This will not only help the doctor to see whether the diet is working and deal with any problems should they arise.

When first using a diabetes diet in order to help control and manage the condition it is important that you keep a food journal. In to this you should record what types of foods you have been eating, the sizes of the servings you have been having and what your blood sugar levels have been like after the food has been eaten. Also, include any other information within this journal that your doctor may actually consider useful and will want.

But when it comes to you using the diet unlike those, which are used for helping a person to lose weight it does not need to be stuck to rigidly. Rather what a person should do is make sure that they eat sufficient amounts of those foods that are good for them and that will not cause problems concerning their blood sugar. Below is some advice that will help when it comes to planning a diet for a person who has diabetes.

1. When devising a diet for a person with diabetes you need to make sure that they are eating sufficient quantities of fresh fruit and vegetables, including such ones as apples, bananas, carrots and beans. Also make sure that they eat those, which have high levels of fiber but low levels of starch in them.

2. Also along with eating plenty of fruit and vegetables a diabetic should make sure that they eat less processed food and more whole grain ones instead. Therefore replace normal white spaghetti or rice with brown rice or whole grain spaghetti instead.

If a diabetic keeps the above in mind along with any other information or instructions that their doctor provides they will find that they are able to control the condition much better. Also a diabetes diet natural treatment means that the chances of them suffering from any untoward side effects are greatly reduced also.

With Type 2 diabetes being a disease that affects how your body reacts to food and in turn how it makes energy. Probably the most common symptom is excessive sweating, this when happening regularly should be checked.

Other symptoms include; increased thirst, increased urination, weight loss, fatigue, nausea, vomiting, bladder infections, blurred vision, bad breath, diminished skin fullness, bleeding gums, ear buzzing, diarrhea, depression, and confusion.

Healthy Diet a help with diabetes

On average Americans consume about 55 teaspoons of sugar each day this can be divided between average sugar use of 150 pounds of sugar and 600 odd cans of soft drink per year. Knowing this its not hard to understand our countries current problem with stressed out fat people.

Junk foods and soft drinks contain dangerous levels of additives and chemicals in addition to sugar. Many of these fast foods are laced with exito-toxins, such as MSG and aspartame.

Losing weight will help Diabetes Sweating

Body fat, especially around the waist, increases insulin resistance. By developing a daily work out schedule and sticking to it, will allow you to get amazing results in just a short period of time. When you are working out you are doing the good kind of sweating, not the bad kind that is caused by your type 2 diabetes.

Another popular way to loose weight is to become a member of one of those weight loss clubs like Jenny Craig. These programs are good because of the structure they provide, generally assigning points to everything you eat. If you are on these programs don’t allow yourself to get upset if you are not loosing weight fast enough. Try to stay positive and keep relaxed, if you stick to the diet you will succeed.

Diabetes Sweating Cure – Work Out Regularly

Besides helping you maintain a healthy weight, regular exercise helps your cells use insulin and blood sugar for energy. The more you work out, the better you feel and the more you get accomplished during the day. Make sure you build variety into your workouts to avoid burnout.

Prescription Medication and Diabetes Sweating Cure

Many times diet and exercise cannot reduce your blood sugar level alone, often this is with people predisposed to diabetes. Even some ethnic groups have a higher chance of getting diabetes than others.

The medications for type 2 are designed to do four different things, delay how quickly sugar is absorbed, increase how much insulin the pancreas makes, decrease insulin resistance and decrease how much sugar the liver produces. By researching your illness combined with regular doctors visits you should be on a successful recovery in no time

Gestational diabetes is when a pregnant woman who has never had diabetes develops diabetes in the twenty-fourth to twenty-eighth week of pregnancy. There are reportedly 135,000 cases of gestational diabetes every year in the United States. While it is a serious condition, women diagnosed with gestational diabetes can and do deliver healthy babies. With the proper medical care, a healthy diet, and controlled weight gain the risks of this type of diabetes are minimized.

Somewhere in the vicinity of the twenty-fourth and twenty-eighth weeks of pregnancy, a physician will request some testing to rule out the possibility of gestational diabetes. One of the following two testing techniques might be used. Oral Glucose Tolerance Test (One Step): entails going without food for four to eight hours and determining blood glucose levels. Then a drink that is high in sugar is consumed and the blood glucose is again determined after two hours. Two Step: entails consuming the high sugar drink first, then blood glucose is determined after one hour. A non-diabetic’s sugar will be in the normal parameters within one hour. If the levels are elevated, the Oral Glucose Tolerance Test will then be issued.

Experts do not know what causes gestational diabetes. Theories propose that the growing fetus creates hormones that obstruct the mother’s capability to create enough insulin to keep blood sugar levels regular. Due to the transformations that her body is undergoing, she might require triple the amount of insulin as normal to get rid of the surplus glucose in her blood stream. The overload of glucose in the blood can be going to the fetus, by way of the placenta, causing a state called Macrosomia or plainly put, “fat baby”.

Some other risks involved to both the mother and the baby are: A macrosomic infant may need to be delivered via caesarian section to avoid injury. The newborn may suffer from low blood sugar. The newborn may suffer jaundice. The infant’s blood may have low mineral levels. The infant may have breathing distress upon delivery. The children are at higher risk of being obese. The risk of developing Type 2 diabetes is higher for both the child and the mother. The chances for a woman developing gestational diabetes with future pregnancy are increased.

In order to steer clear of risks to both mother and her fetus, gestational diabetes needs to be caught and dealt with promptly. A physician will recommend a nutritious diet and safe exercise plan. Moderating carbohydrate intake and exercise helps to control weight gain. An extreme weight increase leads to complications for the mother in addition to the instant and potential risks to the infant. If Insulin is required to manage blood glucose levels, the physician will explain how to take it. Keeping an eye on the blood glucose level is another way to steer clear of danger.

Gestational diabetes corrects itself on its own after delivery. The placenta is not making hormones that have an effect on the mother’s capability to manufacture insulin. It is strongly urged to get another glucose test approximately six weeks after delivering to make certain that Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes was not mistakenly diagnosed as gestational diabetes. Also, having another test executed will also evaluate the possibility of getting Type 2 diabetes in the future.

The risk of having Type 2 diabetes in women, who have had gestational diabetes, and their children, can be lessened by making changes in their eating and exercising habits. Obesity is the leading cause of Type 2 diabetes, but eating right and exercising and losing the excess weight can make all the difference.

We have often heard a family member refer to diabetes and wondered what it was. Diabetes is a disease that develops when the amount of glucose, or more simply blood sugar, rise due to the lack of insulin in our body.

Regulating the sugar level of the blood is most essential to keep diabetes in control. Diabetes can lead to gaining of deadly diseases which may prove to be calamitous if diabetes is not controlled in time as the disease has some short-term effects like an eye-vision which is blurred, loss of weight, concentration loss, frequent urination etc. some of the effects which diabetes can bring forward if it is not controlled in time are kidney failure, heart diseases, eye diseases etc.

The treatment of Diabetes depends on the age of the person, the lifestyle of the person and the stage of disease. Initially, the treatment of Diabetes involves giving a healthy and nutritious diet, and regular exercising. The weight of the diabetic should be under control to minimize the disease. If the above said measures of control are not effective, than Oral medications and Insulin are preferred.

More than 15 million Americans are suffering from diabetes and most of them are dependent on daily insulin shots. The key to control diabetes is to lower blood pressure and blood glucose levels and high cholesterol levels. Smoking triggers heart diseases and even greatly increases the risk for heart disease in diabetic people. Therefore diabetic people are advised to quit smoking in order to control the deadly heart diseases and high cholesterol levels.

There are certain herbs and medicines for Diabetes prescribed in ayurveda like gymnema, bitter melon, bilberry, birch leaf tea, diaplex etc. Gymnema reduces blood sugar levels by lowering insulin resistance, and by increasing the secretion of insulin from the pancreas. Gymnema improves glucose control and helps the body make more insulin. Bitter melon is a fruit that helps increase the number of beta cells in the pancreas, thereby improving the body’s ability to produce insulin. Bilberry contains tannins and compounds called OPCs which are good for the eyesight and the blood vessels. Birch leaf tea helps in reducing weight, thereby helping control Diabetes.

Major drugs given in Diabetes include Insulin and Oral Hypoglycemics. Nutritious diet which is to be given to Diabetics should be rich in Vitamin A, Vitamin D, Vitamin B1, Vitamin B6, Fatty Acids, Alpha Lipoic acid, Chromium, Vanadium, Zinc etc. Vitamin A is an important element for treatment of Diabetes. It prevents side-effects of Diabetes like eye diseases, kidney problems etc. Vitamin D and Zinc help in Insulin production. Vanadium helps move insulin into the cells and Chromium helps in carbohydrate metabolism. Alpha Lipoic acid helps in converting glucose into energy required for the body. All these minerals and Vitamins are found in healthy diet like cod liver oil, nutritional yeast, animal foods including raw butter, cream, cheese, raw meat and fish, beef and lamb, seafood like shellfish, unrefined salt for trace minerals, bone broths for minerals; unfiltered olive oil; molasses, egg yolks; and a variety of fresh and fermented vegetables.

The blood sugar level in body is measured by hemoglobinA1C which should be 7 percent or below. At New York City public hospitals, around 50,000 diabetic patients are being treated and they say that lower blood sugar alone does not help controlling the disease. They are using an electronic patient registry, also keep track of blood pressure, cholesterol levels, as well as eye and foot exams. According to them, Doctors should always treat patients by lowering blood sugar levels i.e. protein HaemoglobinA1C levels unless and until the factors such as age, other chronic conditions, lifestyle and culture are not being controlled.

Controlling diabetes is so important that it should always be supervised by a medical doctor. It is normally done with a plan that keeps blood glucose in a specific range so that it does not go too high or too low. A multipronged approach is always needed and involves, quite often, major lifestyle changes.

The first thing you must do is control your diet.

One very important part of controlling your diabetes is eating a proper diet. While it is true that diet, exercise, and medications are always central, proper diet is possibly the most important key. Diabetics must begin the healthy habits now that probably would have helped them avoid becoming diabetics in the first place.

Exercise is always an important part of controlling diabetes.

Exercise is very important to maintaining a healthy life and managing diabetes. Exercise is good for you because: It lowers blood sugar by speeding the transport of glucose in the cells. Exercise helps the body to decrease insulin resistance and burn excess glucose.

Exercise can also be included in your daily routine, and this is all the treatment some people need. Exercise one to three hours after a meal. Exercise will build a healthier heart, lungs, muscles and body. Combining diet, exercise, and medicine (when prescribed by your doctor) will help control your weight and blood sugar level. You constantly have to get your exercise, eat the right food, check your blood glucose level, and take your pills or insulin at the right time.

Uncontrolled diabetes will destroy your body.

When you’re able to control diabetes it will enable you to avoid serious complications such as kidney damage, major infections in your body, nerve damage to your feet and heart disease.

Soy protein may help to prevent or control some of the complications of diabetes such as atherosclerosis (blockage of the arteries) and kidney disease. Diabetes is the leading cause of blindness, renal failure, and amputation in the United States, and is associated with a range of complications, including heart attacks, strokes, amputations and loss of vision.

Controlling diabetes takes a concerted effort in many areas of your lifestyle. Thankfully it is a lot easier to control now than even just 10 years ago. However, even today, managing your diabetes is a full-time job if you wish to live a long and healthy life.

African Americans are one of the largest groups in the population in the United States that are contracting Type II diabetes. The causes are generally someone with a close relative with the disease, being an African American or being overweight. No one is quite sure why African Americans are more likely to get Type II diabetes than any other ethnic group Affluent African Americans have the same chance as other ethnic groups of dying from complications of the disease.

Fast foods are usually very high in carbohydrates, fats and offer very little in the way of nutrition. They are inexpensive, however, and many people with little money find this to be the only way they can feed their family on a limited budget. French fries are pretty much the staple of any fast food restaurant. They are high in carbohydrates, high in fat and low in protein.

Depression and a Diabetic

Many people who are diagnosed with diabetes are overwhelmed with an onslaught of new information, medications, doctor visits and a feeling of helplessness. They refuse to believe there is anything wrong with them. While they remain in denial, the condition worsens.

Ask your physician questions. Do research. Find out how you can help manage the disease. If at all possible, join a support group for others who also have diabetes. Here you can not only find kindred spirits who are experiencing some of the same fears as yourself, but you can also learn new information. If you are diagnosed with diabetes, take back the control and learn how to manage your disease.

Diabetic and Diet

Vigilance regarding your diet can not only help you control your diabetes, but can also eliminate the need for insulin. People with diabetes have a difficult time breaking down carbohydrates in their system .In addition to foods rich in white sugar, carbohydrates include white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes, some vegetables and fruits as well as anything rich with white flour.

By following a good diabetic diet and taking your prescribed medication, you can live a full and normal life span. One way someone can follow a good diabetic diet is to follow some of the low carbohydrate diets that were popular some years back. There are also many different diabetic cookbooks for those with this condition that can help a person live a happier, healthier life. Diabetes takes a toll on the human body after a certain period of time. By following a good diabetic diet, one can reduce the toll of the disease and live a longer and more fruitful life.

Foot Complications of Diabetes

This is one of the most common complications of diabetes, more than anyone, need to make certain that they address any problems with their feet early on as such problems can result in a life threatening condition. The injury may result in a blister or wound that will be slow to heal. The blister or wound becomes infected and the foot complications of diabetes begin. Because high blood glucose levels make it difficult to stave off infection, a diabetic with a sore on their foot must be treated differently than a person without diabetes. It begins to bleed and crack. Then bandage it, hoping it will heal. It does not heal and soon the wound becomes infected. Gangrene can kill a person, and the doctor knows this. So the person with diabetes has a choice, they can either lose their toe or their life. In most cases, they choose to lose the toe.

In some cases, however, the gangrene has already spread to the foot, plus the amputation risks more infection. This information is not meant to frighten anyone with diabetes No one has to lose a toe or a foot or a leg. They simply need to manage their disease so that they can retain a healthy blood glucose level that will enable them to fight off any infection that may arise from a bump on the foot and stave off neuropathy. Be sure to visit your doctor regularly and monitor your blood glucose level. Diabetes does not have to be a killer.
